Cattolica o Protestante : Fin dai tempi preistorici in Europa, i festeggiamenti (falò, offrerings) segnavano l'inizio di ore più lunghe di luce con incendi e rituali. La festa romana di Saturnalia durò diversi giorni nel mese di dicembre (gioco d'azzardo e offerte). Le tribù germaniche celebrarono anche metà inverno (bere e rituali). Il bulgaro (con Koleduvane) e il polacco (con Gwiazdka) perpetuano questa tradizione. Gesù di Nazaret nacque probabilmente in primavera (i riformisti favoriscono l'autunno). Ma nel IV secolo, il 25 dicembre è stato scelto per la celebrazione della sua nascita da Papa Giulio I (il vescovo Liberus è menzionato anche nel 354 d.C.). Così, un elemento cristiano è stato introdotto nei festival di metà inverno di lunga data. Prima del 1582, gli Stati Papali e altre città-stato italiane celebrarono il giorno di Natale.
